An igloo expedition as a living metaphor for division-of-labor, synergy-oriented project work under unusual and simultaneously emotionally stimulating conditions with high recall value. Constant, effective communication between sub-groups is necessary — always fluctuating between programmatic coordination and pragmatic flexibility. This creates an effective mirror for project management.
Real experience action learning | Division-of-labor project work | Emotionalizing outdoor setting
Scalable complexity — from a half-day expedition to a multi-day business case with overall project management and sub-project groups.
The “Igloo” project must be approached with careful consideration and strategic skill. Constant communication between sub-groups, always keeping the goal in sight — and in the extended version, an overall project management that coordinates the increasingly specialized sub-project groups.
What makes the expedition special:
From joint strategy preparation to sawing snow blocks and simulated avalanche rescue to a shared champagne reception in front of the finished igloo — an igloo expedition leaves a strong lasting impression on the team. The images tell the story of the process: probe search, igloo structure at sunset, breaks by the campfire, exhausted laughter at the end.
Igloo Expedition REAL Outdoor is no ordinary igloo building event. Here, the expedition becomes a living metaphor for division-of-labor, synergy-oriented project work — under unusual and simultaneously emotionally stimulating conditions with high recall value. Complexity can be increased through variants and additional tasks, necessitating overall project management and finer coordination between sub-project groups.
While igloo building is a 2–3 hour team event focusing on the construction task, the expedition goes significantly deeper: As standard, avalanche rescue (probe search, simulated avalanche) and emergency sled construction (authentic alpine emergency techniques) are added. Upon request, the event is conducted as a realistic business scenario — including budget, resource purchasing, and risk assessment.
Our REAL Outdoor method stands for “real experience action learning”. It is preceded by a careful translation of your initial situation and objectives. We then “compose” classic business development with outdoor experiences that unfold targeted metaphorical messages. In the concluding indoor transfer, we translate the insights gained into concrete and verifiable results.
Whether in the Allgäu or worldwide — we have the right venue. Our unique locations are situated far away in the snowy winter world of the Allgäu Alps and offer the peace and concentration required for a multi-part expedition format.
Berggasthof Rohrmoos is beautifully situated on the north side of the Alps at 1,074 m altitude. Here, wonderfully untouched nature awaits you. The in-house kitchen uses only fresh products and game from princely hunts. Overnight stays possible — recommended for multi-day expedition programs.
The rustic Wannenkopfhütte near Oberstdorf is in a magnificent secluded location at 1,350 m altitude. Mulled wine reception in winter, homemade cheese spaetzle in a giant pan, mountain hut romance by the campfire — the ideal place to conduct time-out evaluations after intensive outdoor modules.
Both huts offer the secluded character required for a strategy format: no tourists, no lift noise, clear focus on the program. Plus authentic mountain hut atmosphere for the indoor transfer phase. For multi-day programs, the team stays on-site, so evaluation and reflection by the campfire take place without travel stress.
Face the Igloo Expedition challenge surrounded by the Allgäu winter landscape. First, a field for the quarry is selected, then the ICO trainer explains the technique of igloo building. Additional challenges complement the construction: A sudden “avalanche” (playfully guided, credibly staged), avalanche probe search for buried team members, and emergency sled construction for transport back.
Upon request, the event is conducted as a business case. Example from the real program: Market situation: “A storm is brewing.” Goals: Everyone to safety before the storm (igloo), everyone healthy and safe, achieve profit. Rules: Storm in 2.5 hours, avalanche after 1 hour, casualties possible. Budget: €400 — the team must purchase resources: igloo construction method €50, avalanche training €50, emergency sled construction €50, block production €50, helicopter rescue €50 … The team must find the economically sensible middle ground between an all-inclusive package and self-responsibility.
Team performance is reflected upon with the group via “time out” evaluations by the trainers and subsequently transferred to business life. Which strategies work? Where were there frictional losses? How were disruptions handled? The patterns that became visible in the snow are translated back into the work context — with concrete and verifiable results.
The Igloo Expedition REAL Outdoor is the multi-part format for teams looking for more than just a nice winter experience: Igloo building + avalanche rescue + emergency sled construction, optionally embedded in a business case with budget and risk assessment — and always concluded by time-out evaluations with concrete transfer to business life. “Real experience action learning” instead of just playing in the snow.

Depending on the booking, the meeting point is at Berggasthof Rohrmoos or at the Wannenkopfhütte near Oberstdorf. We organize necessary transfers together with you (shuttle). For multi-day bookings, we also coordinate local accommodation.
The igloo building is a 2–3 hour team event focusing on the construction task — ideal as an incentive or compact team event. The expedition goes significantly deeper: Avalanche rescue and emergency sled construction are standard, multi-day formats are possible, optional business case with budget and time-out evaluations. We advise you on which format fits your goals.
Warm, weatherproof winter clothing in layers, waterproof gloves, sturdy winter boots, hat, and sunglasses. We provide snowshoes, shovels, snow saws, and avalanche probes. Don’t forget a change of clothes to get dry in the hut.
Standardly 10–30 people in an expedition. Half-day format possible as a shortened version; one-day or multi-day formats with overnight stay are more common. For the business case variant, at least a one-day format is recommended so that evaluation and transfer have sufficient space.
Overnight stays are possible directly at Berggasthof Rohrmoos or at the Wannenkopfhütte. Additionally:
